THE MADDEST OBSESSION, by Danielle Lori
I work with a growing list of independent and self-publishing authors as a full-time freelance editor, so it's always exciting when one of the titles I've edited goes on to be published. You can read more about my affordable book editing services by clicking here, or why not read some reviews from some of the authors I've worked with recently?
Last year, I worked with Danielle Lori to edit the first book in the Made series, THE SWEETEST OBLIVION. You can read a little bit about book one (including a short excerpt) by clicking here now. Danielle's smart-sexy New York Mafia Romance has quickly become one of my favorites, so I was delighted when she announced there'd be a book two: THE MADDEST OBSESSION.
...And, hello, obsessed I most definitely WAS. I haven't been so gripped by a book I've worked on in a long time—to such an extent, I broke my rule about not editing sexy books on planes, and spent 8 hours of my 9-hour flight last month unashamedly devouring the first half of THE MADDEST OBSESSION (granted, I minimized the text to the tiniest size and had to sit at the most awkward angle to shield the screen from the poor unassuming stranger in the seat next to me...but, still, you have to understand, I could NOT put this book down even if I'd been asked to).
Before I fangirl further, here's the official book description:
THE MADDEST OBSESSION By Danielle Lori
She fears the dark. He rules it. Her dresses are too tight, her heels too tall. She laughs too loudly, eats without decorum, and mixes up most sayings in the book. Little do most know it’s just a sparkly disguise, there to hide one panic attack at a time. Nobody can crack Gianna’s facade . . . no one anyway, until he comes along. Most see a paragon of morality; a special agent upholding the law. In the New York underworld, others know him as a hustler, a killer, his nature as cold as the heart of ice in his chest. Christian Allister has always followed the life plan he’d envisioned in his youth, beneath the harsh lights of a frigid, damp cell. With a proclivity for order and the number three, he’s never been tempted to veer off course. But perhaps one should never say never . . . One winter night and their lives intertwine. She hates him—his stone-cold demeanor, his arrogance and too-perceptive eye—but over the years, even as their games consist of insulting each other’s looks and intelligence, she begins to live to play with him. Nowhere in Christian’s plans had he ever prepared for Gianna. She’s chaos embodied, not his type, and married, but none of that can stop his eyes from following her wherever she goes. All along, she doesn’t even know that she’s his—his frustration, his fascination. His maddest obsession.
THE MADDEST OBSESSION has so much of what I love in a good romance, with its enemies-to-lovers-style plot and characters with real emotional depth. It's like Danielle says: she doesn't write about gentlemen, and the extremely sexy dirty cop Christian Allister proves that. His dark addiction and obsessive tendencies bleed into every part of this novel and contrast so brilliantly with Gianna's chaotic personality—but under the surface, in the words these two don't confess for so many years, they're really not so dissimilar at all...
As always, Danielle's writing is on fire throughout the novel, and I found myself once again in total awe at some of the beautiful metaphors and incredible imagery laced through the pages while I was editing. This really is an unputdownable story, with fiery-hot romance and enough irresistible twists and turns to keep you flipping the pages, desperate for more.
So, if it wasn't clear enough already, I highly recommend you add THE MADDEST OBSESSION to your reading list and join me in swooning over Christian, Gianna, and the rest of the characters in the Made series right now.

An excerpt from THE MADDEST OBSESSION by Danielle Lori...
'I wanted to put a chink in that ice he wore like armor.
Stepping closer, I ran a finger across his jawline, my voice soft. “You have such a handsome face. Does it get you everything you want?”
There was something so significant about that single word it put a hitch in my breath. I let my finger fall from his face with a light scrape of my stiletto-shaped nail.
“One look from you, and women swoon at your feet.”
He was growing annoyed with me. “Yet, here you stand.”
I laughed lightly. “I have no interest in men, even ones as handsome as you.”
“Because you’re married?”
“Because I’m jaded.”
His eyes narrowed. “You’re drunk.”
My gaze filled with mischief when I slipped my thin dress strap off my shoulder. “And you never are. Don’t you ever live on the edge, Officer? Just let yourself have whatever you want?”
The air pulsed like it had a heartbeat as I pushed the shimmery material over my hips, letting my gown fall to my feet.
He didn’t look away from my face, though the urge was there. Shifting like a breeze heading in the wrong direction.
I stood inches in front of him, in a red bra and panties, with an entire party and my husband just beyond a set of double doors.
His response was simple and exactly what I’d expected from the strait-laced fed, yet it still found the heat to brush my back as I made my way to the pool.
I looked over my shoulder. “Then how do you ever feel alive?”
A smile touched my lips as I dived into the water. Because his gaze had slid down the curves of my body, and it was the furthest thing from cold I’d ever felt.'
